Zimbabwe: Explaining the Crisis

The military has taken command in Zimbabwe. After VP Emmerson Mnangagwa was dismissed by President Mugabe on November 6th, the army – lead by General Chiwenga and concerned by a potential take-over of Grace Mugabe – seized key government posts last Tuesday night. According to South African sources, Mugabe is under house arrest and negotiations between the government and the military are ongoing, with the future of the country uncertain.

To shed some light on this unfolding crisis, we are hosting a panel of experts this Monday. Featuring Dr. Sara Dorman, author of “Understanding Zimbabwe: From Liberation to Authoritarianism” and other acclaimed scholars from the Centre for African Studies, we will attempt to explain the take-over and what is currently happening, explore the history of Zimbabwe to better understand these developments, and try to predict what the future holds. Join us at 6.30 pm in Appleton Tower, Room 2.12!

Rise and Downfall of the Left in Latin America

  • Appleton Tower, Lecture Theatre 2 (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The 21st Century saw in Latin America a surge of left-leaning governments. The last five years have shown a different story, as right-leaning leaders came to power in countries such as Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, be it through elections or impeachment mechanisms. Some of those governments such Temer’s in Brazil enjoy extremely low approval rates (5%), in fact the worst in the country’s history. Other countries such as Venezuela are immersed in chaos as the Maduro government uses its last cards against a growing opposition.

Trying help you understand all this, the Edinburgh Political Union and the Edinburgh University Latin American Society have teamed up to bring you a panel of experts in Latin America to discuss the rise and downfall of the Left in the region. We will be joined by Dr. Julia Calvert (Uni of Edinburgh), Dr. Karen Siegel (Uni of Glasgow) and Dr. Andrea Oelsner (Uni of Aberdeen).

CataloniAdiós: What's next?

On the 1st of October, Catalonia voted in a referendum on its independence. This vote has been declared illegal by the Spanish Constitutional Court, riot police have been dispatched both on, before, and after the day of the vote, and the high court has started an investigation into the heads of the movement.

Nevertheless, the Catalan regional government is determined to press on. As the leader of the autonomous province, Carles Puigdemont told the BBC in the first interview since the vote on Sunday, his government is set to declare independence “at the end of this week or the beginning of next"

Acting swiftly, EPU has gathered several experts to share their insight on the topic. We will be joined by Dr. Asanga Welikala, Professor of Constitutional Law, and Daniel Cetra, a researcher on nationalism and independence movements who is writing his currently working on his PhD on Catalonia, with other panelists to be announced.
