Should we implement Universal Basic Income ?

  • Appleton Tower LT4 (map)

The Buchanan Institute, Political Union and Debates Union are proud to present a panel debate on Universal Basic Income.

UBI is a guaranteed weekly or monthly payment for all citizens, that will provide everyone with a secure financial foundation to build their lives. It is an idea that's becoming increasingly popular in the news, campaigns, and policymaking; in fact, there are efforts to implement pilots in various parts of Scotland.

On the other hand, not everyone is convinced of the need for a universal basic income or believes that UBI is the best way to tackle the social, economic and structural issues that cause inequality.

The panelists will be:
Daniel Clegg, Director of the Graduate School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh
Alison Johnstone, Scottish Green Party MSP for Lothian.
Ray Perman, Director of the David Hume Institute, Chariman of the James Hutton Institute
Jamie Cooke, Head of the Royal Society of Arts Scotland
Jonny Ross-Tatam, former President of the Buchanan Institute
